This project invlolved the refurbishment of a two storey terrace house in Stoke Newington, London. The refurbishment envisioned the opening up of the spaces into open plan which included removing structural walls and replacing them with new steel columns, relocating the staircase, temporarily supporting the roof, which was full of skylights, to allow for demolishing the internal walls and re-supporting it with newly added steel columns.
The existing structure was a hybrid of masonry walls around the perimeter and timber walls internally and for the floors. The proposed additions were done primarily with timber and a few steel elements were additional strength was required. New pad footing were also added locally to receive the newly added columns.
